Irrigation's Role in Nutrient Management

Irrigation and fertilization are inseparable, and over-irrigation is one of the fastest ways to lose applied nitrogen. Excess water carries soluble nitrogen down through Florida's sandy soils and out of the root zone, simultaneously wasting the fertilizer and polluting groundwater. The BMP is to water deeply but infrequently — applying enough to wet the root zone and then allowing the soil to dry until the turf shows early signs of needing water — rather than watering lightly every day on a fixed clock.

Florida Statute — Rain Sensors

Section 373.62, Florida Statutes requires automatic in-ground irrigation systems to have a functioning rain-shutoff device (rain sensor) or soil-moisture sensor that overrides the system when adequate rain has fallen. A working sensor is both a legal requirement and one of the most effective tools for preventing fertilizer loss.

When you coordinate irrigation with fertilization — watering in appropriately and never over-watering after an application — you protect both the investment in the product and the water it could otherwise pollute.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping Principles

Fertilizer BMPs are part of a broader statewide framework known as Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL), built on nine principles: (1) Right Plant, Right Place; (2) Water Efficiently; (3) Fertilize Appropriately; (4) Mulch; (5) Attract Wildlife; (6) Manage Yard Pests Responsibly; (7) Recycle Yard Waste; (8) Reduce Stormwater Runoff; and (9) Protect the Waterfront. As a fertilizer applicator you live principally in #3, but your work touches #2, #8, and #9 directly, and understanding the whole framework helps you give customers sound advice and position your service as part of protecting their water and their property. Fertilizing appropriately — the right rate, source, time, and place — is the single principle most directly under your control on every visit.

Recordkeeping and Documentation

Good records protect the applicator, the company, and the license. For each fertilization, document the date, the property and area treated (square footage), the product used and its guaranteed analysis, the application rate and total amount applied, the nitrogen delivered (and its slow-release fraction), and any relevant conditions — such as adherence to a local blackout window or a waterfront setback. These records demonstrate compliance if you are ever questioned, support consistent service from visit to visit, and are the evidence that your applications stayed within the rule and any local ordinance. Treat documentation as part of the job rather than an afterthought; the few minutes it takes are trivial next to the cost of an unprovable dispute or an enforcement action.

Staying Compliant, Renewals, and Protecting the License

Compliance is an ongoing responsibility. Fertilizer rules and, especially, local ordinances change; stay current through FDACS, UF/IFAS Extension, and the local governments where you work. On every job, apply the 4Rs, keep fertilizer off hard surfaces and away from water, respect blackout periods and setbacks, choose products with meaningful slow-release nitrogen and little or no phosphorus, and match the rate to the turf and the rule.

Renewal Cycle

The Limited Urban Commercial Fertilizer Applicator certification renews every four years, and keeping your continuing education current — including this course — is part of maintaining it. Florida requires 4 CEUs every 4-year cycle: 2 hours Core (Chapter 482 Core) and 2 hours Limited Urban Fertilizer, passed at 75%, documented on the FDACS-13325 Record of Attendance.

Beyond the license, the deeper point is professional: doing this work correctly protects Florida's springs, lakes, and estuaries, keeps your customers and your company out of regulatory trouble, and preserves the reputation and the certification that let you serve. The nutrients you manage are essential to healthy landscapes and harmful to water; your certification exists to keep them on the right side of that line.

Glossary of Key Terms

  • Guaranteed analysis — The three numbers on a fertilizer label giving the percent by weight of nitrogen (N), available phosphate (P₂O₅), and soluble potash (K₂O), in that order.
  • Readily-available (soluble) nitrogen — The fraction of nitrogen that dissolves and becomes plant-available immediately; capped at 0.7 lb/1,000 ft² per application under 5E-1.003.
  • Slow-/controlled-release nitrogen — Nitrogen that releases gradually (coated, chemically bound, or organic), reducing leaching and enabling season-long feeding within the rule.
  • Nonpoint-source pollution — Pollution entering water diffusely from across a watershed (e.g., lawn runoff and leaching), rather than from a single pipe.
  • Eutrophication — Nutrient over-enrichment of water that fuels algal blooms and depletes dissolved oxygen.
  • Leaching — Downward movement of dissolved nutrients (especially nitrogen) through soil past the root zone into groundwater.
  • Watershed — The land area that drains to a common water body.
  • TMDL / BMAP — Total Maximum Daily Load (the pollutant limit an impaired water can receive) and Basin Management Action Plan (the watershed cleanup plan to meet it).
  • Blackout period — A local seasonal ban (commonly June 1–Sept 30) on applying N/P fertilizer to turf during the high-runoff rainy season.
  • Chlorosis — Yellowing of plant tissue from a nutrient deficiency (nitrogen, iron, manganese, magnesium, etc.).
  • Calibration — Adjusting a spreader so it delivers the calculated target rate of product per unit area.
  • 4Rs — Right Source, Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place — the nutrient-stewardship framework.
